Difference in Sizes of Diamonds
Would I be able to Notice Size Differences in Carat Weights?

What
carat size should I choose? Can I differentiate between 2 diamonds that are 0.3
mm apart? When would I start seeing a visual difference in size with diamonds
from different carat weight groups?
Don't
worry; you aren't alone in asking these questions. We at Royale Diamonds get
asked questions like these regularly, so we created this blog to answer them.
Firstly
let us address why people tend to raise such a query.
Since
we are talking about a solitaire ring that costs lakhs of rupees, fundamental
thought is always associated with pricing. After all, we all want the best
value for our money, so we don't want to make a purchasing decision that would
not do justice to that thought!
Diamond Prices are Directly Proportionate with
Carat Weight
Diamond
prices keep on increasing at every 10 cents (0.1 carats). For example, a 0.70-carat
diamond would cost about 20% more than a 0.60-carat diamond with similar
specifications.
The
difference in size between these two diamond sizes is roughly 0.3mm. And if you
pick up a scale and look at the subdivisions, a 0.3mm difference may be a minor
size difference.

The issue that requires attention is: Can we distinguish the differences?
Uncanny
as it seems, people notice the 0.3mm difference when comparing objects of
smaller sizes. When comparing more important things, our brains perceive the
same contrast as insignificant.
Let
us go through some examples to illustrate this.
Do you see the difference of 0.3 mm between the two circles above? Well, most people notice this subtle difference when they compare a 0.60-carat diamond against a 0.70-carat diamond.
1.50 Carat vs 1.75 Carat
7.3mm vs 7.6mm
Invariance,
the same physical difference of 0.5mm between a 1.50-carat diamond and a
1.75-carat diamond, cannot be detected easily because of how our brain works.
Here are a few more Examples to Check
Also, what happens if the diamonds are further apart from each other?
0.90 Carat vs. 1.00 Carat
1.50 Carat vs. 1.75 Carat
2.50 Carat vs. 2.80 Carat
It is
harder to notice the size difference when they are apart. In real life, most
people unconsciously observe diamonds from a distance, and picking up minute
differences is challenging.
For those who intend to buy diamonds within the 0.50 - 0.75-carat ranges, we have another illustration to help you envision their appearance. If we refer to the image below, it is clear that the difference in size is very noticeable.
0.50 Carat vs 0.70 Carat
5.1mm vs 5.7mm
Ultimately, What Matters Most is Your Opinion!
The
opinion is more of a personalised matter than a generalised one. Some may see
differences in sizes easily, and some won't. It is the same with the diamond
colour, where some individuals can see apparent differences between F and G
colour diamonds. In contrast, most of us will be able to identify the
difference.
We
know that some people get emotionally impacted by the size of the diamonds they
possess. Even if they are wearing a 0.95-carat diamond, in their mind, it is
only good enough if it is above the 1.00-carat diamond.
Go
for a carat size that's "mind-clean" and economical. Diamonds are
purchases which are supposed to be enjoyed instead of being something that
always agonises you at the back of your mind.
